A Healthy Start: Your Guide to the First Trimester
What to expect in the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, from early scans to nutrition and rest.
The first trimester is a time of rapid change for both mother and baby. Early antenatal care helps identify any risks and sets the foundation for a healthy pregnancy.
Your first appointments
- Confirmation of pregnancy and dating scan
- Blood tests including blood group, haemoglobin and screening tests
- Blood pressure and weight baseline
- Discussion of folic acid and supplements
Nutrition and wellbeing
Eat small, frequent meals to help with nausea, stay hydrated, and continue folic acid until at least twelve weeks. Avoid smoking, alcohol and unprescribed medicines.
“Early antenatal care is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect you and your baby.”
When to seek help
Contact your obstetrician promptly if you experience heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or fever.
